PREPARATION BEFORE YOU GET SPRAY TANNED

Exfoliate

Since DHA reacts with dead skin cells, patches of dry sky may result in uneven, blotchy coloring.  The Day before getting a spray tan, exfoliate your body with a

Loofah or scrub and moisturize well with any oil free moisturizer.  We sell several excellent products such as Forever After, and Kisses, which we highly recommend for using both before and after your spray tan.  Exfoliating helps to promote an even coverage and lengthens the duration of the tan.  Make sure you pay particular attention to elbows, ankles, knees and wrists.  Moisturize the day before your spray tan.  This will avoid the tan “sticking” to these areas and giving them a darker look.  Do not use highly moisturized soap such as Dove, and do not use body wash.

Waxing/Shaving

If you plan to shave or get a wax, do so before your spray tan treatment (try to schedule it at least a day before). Both of these hair removal options will also remove dead skin cells, which will make your spray tan fade more quickly

Wear Loose or Dark Clothing to your session

Spray tanning solution includes a bronzer to help the tanning technician see any missed spots.  While the tanner itself will not stain clothing, the bronzer could.  Wear loose, dark clothing after your spray tan and avoid white clothing or bedding until you have showered.  If you do not feel comfortable being unclothed during the session, wear a dark coloured bathing suit (2 piece preferred for woman), or dark undergarments.  Men must wear underwear or boxers.

Avoid Makeup, Deodorant, and Perfume

Some of these products may prevent the tanning solution from reacting with skin

properly and others can even cause skin to turn green. Play safe and make sure there are not other cosmetics on your body before getting a spray tan.  To keep your spray tan from fading, moisturize diligently after your first shower and avoid exforliating products.  Moisturize morning and night daily to keep skin from drying out.  For best results use a tan extender such as Forever After, Body Kisses or Platinum Indulgence (all sold here at Tan Without Sand), to prolong your tan.

DO NOT SPRAY TAN IF YOU ARE PREGNANT OR BREAST FEEDING (AS A PRECAUTION), WITHOUT EXPRESS WRITTEN CONSENT FROM A DOCTOR.

Refrain from eyelash tinting 12 hours before as it may react with the DHA.

Immediately after your spray tan:

Wear loose clothing.

Keep skin completely dry, avoid water contact.

Do not apply any products over the developing tan.

Allow tan to develop for at least 8-12 hours (overnight if possible).

Avoid other beauty/hair treatments while tan is developing.

Avoid activities that make you perspire.

Drink hot beverages through a straw as contact with a hot cup can strip colour from around your mouth.  Toothpase can also strip color while your tan develops

The top bronze spoilers

Hand washing and spilling liquids on the skin.

After your tan has developed:

Rinse off remaining colour guide with warm/hot water. You will see color washing off the first time you shower. This is the surface color that was applied. Your skin will continue to tan as the self-tan reaction occurs on your skin.

Once the water runs clear gently wash with a mild soap. When showering, use your hand instead of a washcloth.

Avoid products that contain alpha hydroxy acids (AHA's), or alcohol based products, as they can strip colour.

Avoid swimming pools as chlorine, or taking long hot baths will prematurely fade your tan.

To prolong your tan:

Use Tan Without Sand's tan extender's or moisturizers, such as Forever After, Body Kisses, or Platinum Indulgence. Using it daily will help lock in the colour, hydrate your skin and prolong your tan.
