Frequently Asked Questions about Air Brush Spray Tanning

What should I wear to my Air Brush Session?

Most people wear nothing. However, if you'd be more comfortable wearing a bathing suit or underwear, be aware that the tanning solution may stain it but is water-soluble and should wash out. (we recommend wearing at least bottoms such as a thong, and men must wear either underwear or boxers)

Should I cover my hair while during my Air Brush Tanning session?

Many customers wear a disposable shower cap which you can bring from home, to keep tanning solution from getting into their hair. Other customers tan without covering their hair.  The Air Brush Tanning solution does not penetrate the hair follicle. The solution we use is water-soluble and will easily wash out.

How do I dry after my Air Brush Tanning session?

The Air Brush Tanning solution applied in your session is moist and very fine. Your skin will feel hydrated and nourished. Tiny droplets remaining on your arms or legs after the session are easily removed by allowing you to dry completely. You will be fan dried, and if you like, you can do a 3 minute session in our stand up unit (for a minimal cost), although it is not necessary.

How quickly can I get dressed after an Air Brush Tanning session?

Once you've “fan” dried for approx. 10-12 minutes, there's little chance of any bronzer or DHA getting on your clothes. If you perspire soon after your Air Brush tanning session, some of the bronzer may transfer to your clothing. Since the bronzer is completely water-soluble, it will wash out.
How long should I wait after a tanning session before showering?

To give the DHA enough time to fully set, we recommend waiting a minimum of 8-12 hours after tanning. Showering sooner may diminish the intensity of the tan.

Do Air Brush Tanning Solutions have any smell after contact with my skin?

Some people notice a slight starchy smell on their skin a few hours after a tanning session. This is simply the DHA reacting to proteins in your skin and it fades away fairly quickly.

Will swimming affect my tan?

Swimming in chlorinated water or salt water can fade the effects of your Air Brush Spray Tan results, cause possible streaking and will diminish the length of your tan. However, normal activities such as bathing, showering or physical activities will not affect the quality of the tan.

Will my skin look orange?

Millions of tanners can't be wrong. That's how many successful Air Brush tans there have been in just a few years. Before Air Brush Tanning most self-tanners were creams and lotions applied by hand. That meant inconsistent coverage. Too much lotion applied in one place left the skin looking orange. Not enough lotion left unattractive streaks.  Spray Tan Booths tend to overspray certain areas and cannot tan the hard to reach areas, which may leave an uneven look to your tan.  We advise you to listen to our recommendations as we will only Air Brush spray tan you to a level which we feel is best for your skin type?

If I get an Air Brush Tan, can I also tan in tanning beds and in the sun?

Yes. There is nothing our Air Brush tanning solution that would prevent you from tanning in tanning beds or the sun. In fact, a number of customers have found that tanning with UV rays and getting an Air Brush Tan, actually gives them a better overall tan. If you plan to use a tanning bed and get an Air Brush tan in the same day, we recommend that you use the tanning bed first. Remember, however, that our Air Brush tanning solution does not give you any protection from UV rays.

I have fair skin and have never been able to tan. Will I look tan after an Air Brush tanning session?

A great benefit of Air Brush Tanning sessions is that it is perfect for individuals who can't or prefer not to tan conventionally.

Has anyone had an allergic reaction to Spray Tan Solutions?

The components we use in our Tanning Solutions have been successfully used in cosmetics and food products for decades, and are proven safe for use on the skin. If you've had previous allergic reactions to self-tanning lotions or cosmetics, you may want to do a “patch test” first. Put a small amount of our tanning solution on a small area of your skin to test for possible reactions.

What's in our Spray Tan Solution?

All of our solutions may contain the following natural ingredients:

DHA – This is what produces a long-term tan. The use of DHA has been FDA-approved for decades as an external tanning agent. When applied, DHA reacts with proteins in the skin's superficial layer to form a golden brown color. Your skin begins to darken two to three hours after application and reaches its peak color within 24 hours. The color will gradually fade through natural exfoliation, just like a tan from the sun. To maintain optimal color, you'll want to tan every week or so.

Moisturizers – These help carry the DHA deeper into the skin and promote a softer, smoother finish.  Organic Aloe Vera, a natural moisturizer that helps skin draw moisture to the surface. Aloe Vera also softens the skin and helps smooth wrinkles.

Vitamins A,C, and E, as well as natural Cucumber and Green Tea Extracts.

How many Air Brush tanning sessions will I need to achieve the color I want?

You'll be tan after one session, but it may take additional sessions to achieve your desired color. Once you reach your ideal color, you should be able to maintain it by tanning every week or so.

Air Brush tanning vs. Spray Booths?

Why be treated like a car going through an automated car wash when you can receive the attention to detail and quality given from a trained technician?

Booth- whatever your body size or height, a spray booth will spray you with the exact same motion and amount of spray.

Airbrush- The amount of spray can be adjusted and tailored to your body type and for your needs.

How to Prolong the Tan?

Once the tan sets, the color produced by the tanning solution will not wash off with ordinary soap and water, although it does fade gradually when the upper layers of the epidermis wear away. Use Tan Without Sand's tan extender's or moisturizers, such as Forever After, Kisses, or Platinum Indulgence. Using it daily will help lock in the colour, hydrate your skin and prolong your tan.  If for any reason you want to remove the tan, you can gently scrub the tanned surface with a soft wash cloth or sponge. The tan will not completely disappear immediately, but your skin will lighten a bit.

Depending on individual skin type, it may take several applications before the desired skin tone is achieved.

Keeping Skin Healthy after an Airbrush Tan

We recommend applying a tan extender on the skin for three consecutive nights after tanning. Also, it is a good idea to keep the skin moisturized to avoid peeling. If desired, the tan can be maintained with repeat applications.  We sell some excellent products designed for keeping your tan as long as possible!

Remember that the tanned surface is still susceptible to the sun's harmful UV rays, so use lotion with high SPF before sun exposure.
